OMA Publishes Mobile Code White Paper

The OMA recently published a comprehensive white paper addressing important components of the mobile code ecosystem, such as different symbologies, usage scenarios, and direct versus indirect encoding,

The white paper aims to stimulate a global market in which barcodes act as enablers for camera-equipped handsets to access content and services. Some technologies already exist; for example, in Japan, 2D barcode scanning is in widespread use.

However there is fragmentation in the worldwide market currently, due to the variety of approaches to the questions of which barcode symbologies should be supported, what format of data they should contain, and how reader software should behave when barcodes are read.

The Open Mobile Alliance aims to halt fragmentation by providing guidelines on existing standards as well as creating specifications to address interoperability needs as they arise. Once enough mobile code readers that follow those guidelines are deployed on consumer handsets, marketing organizations and publishers will be able to include mobile codes as links to online content and services with confidence, in advertising and promotional campaigns, and in printed and displayed media of many kinds.

OMA Update On Mobile Code Standards

The OMA recently published an April 2008 Technical Plenary Summary stating that a 2D barcode white paper has been completed and is currently in consistency review. The summary also noted that a requirements document has been started with initial sections populated.

announced it had carried out initiatives which lead to GSM Association (GSMA) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) activities to accelerate mass mobile marketing using 2D barcodes.


The Mobile Codes Consortium,
the cross-industry group created to promote unified standards in camera cell-phone barcode reading technology, in conjunction with the GSM Association and the Open Mobile Alliance, continues to bring large scale adoption of mobile codes closer to reality.

Dr. Frank Müller, Director of Intellectual Property and Strategy at NeoMedia Technologies, said: "The commitment of GSMA and OMA gives important impetus for the worldwide development of mobile marketing based on using 2D barcodes. Another Step Closer To Mobile Code Standards

Last December the Mobile Codes Consortium (MC2) announced it had carried out initiatives which lead to GSM Association (GSMA) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) activities to accelerate mass mobile marketing using 2D barcodes.

The Mobile Codes Consortium,
the cross-industry group created to promote unified standards in camera cell-phone barcode reading technology, in conjunction with the GSM Association and the Open Mobile Alliance, continues to bring large scale adoption of mobile codes closer to reality.


A work item document entitled "Mobile 2D Bar codes" was created last year by the Mobile Codes Consortium and approved by the OMA Board of Directors.


The approved work item included the following recommendations: (1) Choice of 2D barcode symbologies (2) The data stored in the barcodes and (3) The terminal behaviors in response to reading barcodes, including behaviors with respect to some existing (1D and 2D) barcodes standards. Prime candidates include the industrial standards for barcode symbologies QR and Datamatrix, and the NFC Forum NDEF data structure. The normative specifications to be developed shall ensure backward compatibility with relevant 2D barcode systems, so that mobile devices that are compliant to the specifications to be developed shall be able to recognize and process such existing 2D barcode print-outs or images.


The work item also concluded that, barcode reading software needs to be included in devices supporting mobile codes, and the interface towards back-end servers also needs to be agreed.

According to Tim Kindberg of HP Laboratories and co-chairman of the MC2, "Barcode reading
technology makes it much easier for people with mobile phones to click straight from paper or displays to content and services. You just point the camera and click to connect. This will make the mobile internet much more accessible."

Thomas Curwen of Publicis Dialog and co-chairman of MC2, said: "Mobile barcodes will
make advertising much more efficient. Customers clicking straight from, say a poster, to the Internet on their mobile device – will make traditional display advertising as interactive as banner ads. With the added advantage that advertisers can track and measure which ads create the highest click-through rates." Curwen added, "It is unique for an ad agency to be leading technological change on such a scale – and we are doing this because it will help make us more efficient."

GSMA & OMA To Drive Mobile Code Standards

GSMA and OMA Commit To MC2 Initiative

MC2, the cross-industry group created to promote unified standards in camera cell-phone barcode reading technology, has brought large scale adoption of mobile marketing closer to reality.

The group, led by global marketing agency Publicis, Hewlett-Packard, Deutsche Telekom,
Gavitec, KPN, NeoMedia, Nokia, Qualcomm and Telefonica O2 Europe, has persuaded fellow members of the GSMA and OMA, two of the global mobile phone industry’s representative bodies, that the time is ripe to work in partnership to set worldwide mobile barcode standards.

This month, the GSMA, the global trade association representing 700 GSM mobile phone operators, and OMA, the leading industry forum for developing market driven, interoperable mobile service enablers, will embark on a landmark exercise, which aims to deliver technology and marketing industry standards for mobile codes. The news follows a nine-month period of lobbying, plan development and recruitment of
partners by the MC2 to make standards a reality. Now that the leading industry bodies are driving the standards for mobile barcodes, the MC2 will start alerting the marketing industry that it can start planning now about how it will deploy them. Mobile marketing is now becoming a true reality and the industry needs to be ready.

the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) for mobile content. A standard technology used industry wide, which, like a Bank-card, allows the consumer-facing mark of instant access to mobile content, the bar code, to be used regardless of a subscriber’s manufacturer or service provider of choice."

The range of potential applications for mobile codes is enormous, and the impact for
brands and on consumers is wide-reaching:

* For years, the ad industry has tried to work out which location or which execution of a campaign performed best in delivering leads. Phone numbers and long URLs have been tried but nothing has been very satisfactory. Mobile codes have much more to offer a marketer: the user can point and click it faster, thereby reducing the effort to respond, with dramatic effects on the results. By simply pointing the camera at a mobile code, the user instantly interacts with the marketing message. At the end of the campaign, marketers can measure "click-through rates" (by time of day, progression through to sale, and even time spent), making paper as measurable as the internet. Instantly, we can know which location or execution generated the highest response and sales.

* A possible application for a financial services client selling travel insurance might be a poster in the waiting lounge of an airport showing a matrix of ‘number of passengers’, ‘destination’ and ‘time away’. At the point of departure, the 40% of people who normally leave the UK without travel insurance, could click the corresponding mobile code and get a rough quote online, and even buy, using one of the emerging secure mobile payment systems

* Or imagine a system that can tell you when your bus is coming, without the need to build and maintain the LED screens at every bus stop (reducing cost and energy usage). A simple mobile code at each bus stop could give you the same info and even the weather forecast.

Torulf Jernstrom, of Nokia, said: "The key advantage of mobile barcodes is that it makes discovery of internet services very easy for the consumer hence a powerful tool for marketers and advertisers. A prerequisite for widespread deployment of this concept is an open, interoperable standard which is now developed in collaboration with GSMA and OMA."

Marcel Annaka of KPN said: "Mobile codes will change the way we look at printed media. Printed media will finally become personalized and interactive as Mobile codes enable an extremely user-friendly connection between offline media and the internet on mobile devices."

MC2 Meets In London During OMA World 2007


The Mobile Codes Consortium (MC2) held a meeting in London this past week during Open Mobile Alliance World 2007.

The event offers an opportunity to engage the OMA community in the successes and future direction of the organization, as well as demonstrate the commitment of the OMA to the wireless industry and to the global adoption of mobile data services. OMA World is an informational event open to all OMA members at all levels of membership. Selected invitees from the analyst and media community, as well as guests from other industry organizations are welcome to attend.

According to Torulf Jernstrom, Business Development Manager at Nokia, and Dr. Frank Mueller, Chief Strategist at Gavitec, 20 people attended the Mobile Codes Consortium meeting this past Wednesday in London and the entire initiative was looking very good.

The meeting, which included representatives from Vodafone and Orange, even included reps from Mobile Tag, which was spun off from France's leading mobile software developer Abaxia.


According to HP lab's Tim Kindberg, "The Mobile Codes Consortium is the only body seriously aimed at building a mobile codes ecosystem. It is setting the standards that others will follow. It's where Nokia -- not to mention Telefonica O2 -- is really at with mobile codes."


Nokia and Gavitec are both members of the MC2 Steering Group, along with HP Labs, Publicis Groupe, NeoMedia Technologies, Telefonica O2, Deutsche Telekom, and KPN.

Deutsche Telekom Joins Mobile Codes Consortium

Pressure continues to mount for industry standards as telecom giant Deutsche Telekom joins the Mobile Codes Consortium (MC2) – a cross-company group setup to promote unified standards in camera cell-phone barcode reading technology. They join the original founding members Gavitec, Hewlett-Packard, NeoMedia Technologies and Publicis Groupe, to form MC2’s steering group, which will be responsible for guiding the new organization.

Deutsche Telekom is one of the world's leading telecommunications companies represented in 50 countries around the globe. As a unit of Deutsche Telekom, T-Mobile International is one of the world's leading mobile communications providers, with more than 100 million customers in Europe and the United States. They follow industry leaders Nokia, KPN and Telefónica O2 Europe who joined the Mobile Codes Consortium last month.

MC2’s aim is to accelerate the adoption of code-reading technologies that will enable users of mobile camera-phones pointed at a printed or displayed 2D barcode, to activate the phone to connect to a particular web-page, download coupons or other digital mediums, make a phone call or send a text message at the click of a button. NeoMedia Names William Hoffman As CEO


NeoMedia Technologies announced today that it has appointed William Hoffman, 45, a senior technology executive with extensive global technology and telecommunications industry experience, as its chief executive officer, effective June 18.

Mr. Hoffman replaces Charles W. Fritz, NeoMedia's chairman and founder, who has served as the company's interim CEO since December.

There, he was responsible for driving revenue growth of 1,140% in 18 months.

Previously, as the CEO and a director of mBlox, Inc, the world's largest mobile transaction network, Mr. Hoffman served in London, Atlanta and Sunnyvale, CA. There he focused on reorganizing, restructuring, and then rapidly growing the business to over 180 countries. His responsibilities included capital structure, Board, organization, strategy, and execution of the firm's business plan. He was instrumental in developing partnerships with more than 500 wireless operators around the globe including Vodafone®, T- Mobile®, Verizon® and Cingular®, and achieving a $75 million annual run- rate in 18 months time for the world's largest provider of messaging infrastructure.

Mr. Hoffman, who has served as president, CEO and COO for several other telecommunications companies, also spent 8 years with Sprint managing Sprint's business services throughout the state of Florida. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Auburn University, which he attended on a special U.S. Army scholarship. Mr. Hoffman served in the U.S. Army from 1983-87, attaining the rank of Captain.

Nokia, KPN, & O2 Join Mobile Codes Consortium

Pressure Mounts for Industry Standards as Telecom Giants Join the Mobile Codes Consortium.

Telecom industry leaders Nokia, KPN and Telefónica O2 Europe have joined the Mobile Codes Consortium (MC2) – a cross-company group setup to promote unified standards in camera cell-phone barcode reading technology. They join the original founding members Gavitec, Hewlett-Packard, NeoMedia Technologies and Publicis Groupe, to form MC2’s steering group, which will be responsible for guiding the new organization.

MC2’s aim is to accelerate the adoption of code-reading technologies that will enable users of mobile camera-phones pointed at a printed or displayed 2D barcode, to activate the phone to connect to a particular web-page, download coupons or other digital files, make a phone call or send a text message at the click of a button. Based on the widespread adoption of this technology in Japan and the growing popularity of camera-phones, the MC2 believes that this will have many important applications for both the marketing and public communications industries.

"KPN is constantly exploring new innovative services for its customers and considers 2D barcodes
to be an important breakthrough development, offering consumers considerable advantages while also generating interesting business opportunities for participating companies", said Marcel Annaka, Business Incubator of KPN.

“This technology could make traditional advertising as interactive as the internet, both in terms of
helping customers go straight to offers, and in terms of helping marketing agencies measure which ads are generating what levels of response,” said Thomas Curwen, Planning Director at Publicis.

“The standards for wireless technology in Asia far exceed those in Europe and America. A unified consortium is the first step to worldwide advancement and NeoMedia is committed to such a partnership,” said Chas Fritz, CEO of NeoMedia Technologies.

And Tim Kindberg, a senior researcher from HP Labs, who has been working with mobile code technologies, said: “MC2 believes that standards or recommendations are necessary to make the technology as popular and useful in the Europe and the US as it already is in Japan and South Korea, where market dominant companies set the
standards.”

Kindberg added: “If, on the other hand, the new technology is allowed to develop without standards, it will result in gradual fragmentation, with readers and barcodes not working consistently together. This could prevent the widespread adoption of the technology by both the public and the marketing industry and may confuse customers.”

The newly created steering group will now focus on the best approach to enable MC2 to press for widely accepted industry standards. In the first instance, this will mean guiding it until it can join an existing mobile industry body, where the group will be better able to meet its objectives of recommending business models, technology standards, and methods of making mobile code technology useful to the public and to the marketing industry.

Announce Mobile's CEO Discusses qode®

Well my previous posts regarding 2D codes, Hip2D, and qode seemed to have generated lots of questions from everyone. Please understand that I am unable to answer official questions about qode® and NeoMedia. I am also not an attorney and definitely not specifically a patent attorney.

One thing I have learned over the years that an attorney can and will argue any point if permitted. Patent law tends to fall into this category. There will always be someone out there who will test the limits of the patent. Look at the situation between Vonage and Verizon. There is now speculation floating around that Verizon obtained the patents in question under false pretense. Is it true? I don’t know. Do I care? No, it does not impact my everyday business. Should I care? Probably. Why should I care? Because this isn’t about what the patent is exactly, but more about who owns the patent. When it comes down to it, decisions in cases like this affect the rulings in future patent cases. So the right decisions here and the better attorney at proving his or her case will have a direct effect on future patent cases.

With that said, I am not going to get into a drawn out description of the patents. Do I understand them? Yes, but my understanding is based on my own interpretation, the information provided by others, and working knowledge of the product. My interpretation is therefore biased. To sit and argue over the validity of the patent is useless and only draws away from the value of the application. In other words, let the attorneys do what they get paid to do and worry more about making a name for the product. Nobody cares that Nokia and Qualcomm are in a heated battle over patents, in the end the consumer is still buying the product.

Okay, now that I got that off my chest. qode and Hip2D work as such. When a customer comes to Announce Mobile or NeoMedia for a qode or Hip2D solution, basically we provide them a web-based interface to generate their own Aztec code. When they create this code they are asked for several pieces of information.

1. The name (separate of a keyword) for the 2D code.
2. A description about the code - used for record keeping and easy identification in the system.
3. Now they can create destinations for the code based on several things. They can have just a simple code that has one URL associated with it and that is all it is used for. They can have a code with different URLs based on the browser type (i.e. Pocket PC, Palm, Desktop, Brew, etc). Or finally, they can set different destinations based on rules they create. The rules can include something like (a) if the time of day is such, provide this URL (b) if the carriers is this, do this URL (c) if the phone model is this, do this URL.

Once they have completed the above information they will then click to generate the code and will be provided an image file of the code. Now we received a lot of questions about where the actual URL is stored and where it is translated. First, let’s make something very clear, the code itself can not do anything on its own. It is simply a piece of data and needs an application to interpret and decide what to do with that code exactly. The difference between many of the different applications on the market is where this interpretation takes place. I am unable to answer specifically for all the other applications on the market, since I personally do not have a working knowledge of all of them. I do know that most of the others interpret the code directly at the phone level. Meaning that the application for reading the code interprets and responds to the code without conferring with a remote location. With NeoMedia’s qode®reader, it interprets the code on the phone, then communicates with a server to determine exactly what to do with that code.

The benefits and downsides

Obviously if the data is interpreted and acted upon by the application at the phone level, the uses are limited as to what you can do. If you want to change the dynamic nature of the code you would have to physically replace the code. What do I mean by “dynamic nature”? Just taking a consumer to a WAP site is not the real value in qode. Taking a consumer to a unique website based on the phone make, time of day, browser version, geographic location IS the true value. With static code solutions you are unable to do this entirely. The application would have to communicate with a server somewhere to determine how to respond. Okay, so couldn’t this be built into the application? Yes and no. The nice thing about qode is the reusability of the codes. With the other solutions, it is use one and throw away. With qode I can change the response at any given time based on various criteria. I can change how the 2D code responds to different criteria. Say for example, I want to add a new response to the code based on time of day. I simply go in, edit the rules on the server, and I am done. The code will now respond appropriately. So why not just direct the person to a single website and have that website respond based on the headers of that phone? You could do that, but think of the trouble. Plus, if the website gets it wrong you will end up on the wrong site or with the wrong information. With qode, if the reader gets it wrong it will just default to the default URL you provide when creating the code.

So what is this all about? All the codes contain information. It is up to the application and/or server how that information is acted upon.

So why did Announce Mobile choose qode? Because of the power of dynamic codes plain and simply. We want to be able to offer our consumers a simple solution with endless possibilities. With qode we are able to do just that. The other half is that we want our customers to be able to control the information for every code they have. In the business world URLs are constantly changing with various dynamic criteria. Businesses need to adapt these URLs to a mobile space quickly and efficiently. If they have to reissue new codes each time a URL changes they would be wasting valuable time and money.

Finally, let me address one more thing … Myself and Announce Mobile are separate entities from NeoMedia. We are a partner of theirs to provide Hip2D using qode. So with that said we are unable to answer specific investment or investor questions centered around NeoMedia and their subsidiaries. I will address a question that was posed to me though regarding patents and first to market. The question was basically do I believe that NeoMedia can succeed in the market since they are not first to market. I can’t answer this specifically, only time and the market know the true answer. And well, if I could guess, I surely would not be typing a blog at 10pm from my couch :)

I will turn the question around and look at history. History says companies like NeoMedia can and will succeed. It is better to get a product right and be last to market then be first to market and have it all wrong. Companies that are offering and promoting the product now may or may not succeed, again it is all determined by the market. But in the end the one with the best product will succeed, and I personally believe that NeoMedia has the best product from what I have seen in this space. You don’t have to look far when looking for similar situations in history. IBM, Lotus, and the list can go on and on. They either succeeded or failed but they were all first to market with something. Are the companies themselves failures, no. They all succeeded in their own way. But they were first to market with an innovative and groundbreaking technology and they got surpassed by companies that came along several years later with the “BETTER” product. So there you have it. Like the patents, arguing over who has the better product and who will succeed is useless. It is better to focus your attention and to get out there and promote the product in the now. Does it work? YES. Does it function as described? YES. At this time it is not available on every phone platform, but that is quickly coming.

Oh and one last question I was asked.6-6 Sorry, for the long post, just trying to address the over 100 e-mails that the entries from the last two days generated.

When is Announce Mobile or NeoMedia going to start marketing Hip2D or qode respectively. Again, I can not answer for NeoMedia. Announce Mobile on the other hand is actively selling and marketing the Hip2D solution to businesses and brands. We will continue to do so. Will we market to consumers? No, but we will HELP the businesses and brands market to the consumers and get the word out about qode reader. Why won’t we market to the consumer? It is extremely costly to market directly to consumers. We would rather focus those dollars on building the best product and generating buzz among brands and businesses. If a major US brand went tomorrow and started putting codes on all their products to run a contest you better believe the downloads and consumer awareness of qode reader would come quickly. So why focus on the consumer when the brand can generate the buzz for us. Consumers awareness will come with brand awareness mainly. It is harder to get a consumer to download an application if they aren’t going to use it for anything then to say you will have a chance to win a free XYZ if you download this application. Yes, consumer awareness and brand acceptance are a catch-22, but we believe that consumer marketing will be done word of mouth better. Brand/business marketing we have no problem directing dollars to.

Announce Mobile's CEO Discusses 2D Codes

As I stated in the first 2D code post today, there are several different types of 2D codes that are currently available for use. I started thinking some more, and felt it may be a good idea to give everyone a brief idea of what the 3 main ones (Aztec, Data Matrix, and QR Codes) are and how they are different to some extent.

Data Matrix Codes are widely used across the world for various applications. You can see from the example Data Matrix code on the left the 2 dark and 2 alternating lines around the edge. These are called the finder pattern and are used to tell the reader where the information in the barcode is located. Additionally, the space around the code represents the amount of white space that must surround the code in order to be properly read. Data Matrix codes also have a built in error correction mechanism.

QR or Quick Response codes provide high-speed, omnidirectional reading with built in error correction. Like the Data Matrix codes, their finder patter is on the outer edges, making reading difficult from an electronic display. Also, like the Data Matrix code, the QR code requires a white space surrounding it in order to be properly read and deciphered.

Lastly, there are Aztec codes which are currently supported by the qode®reader application. Aztec codes are built around a square grid with a bulls-eye pattern in the center as you can see from the picture on the left. Reading an Aztec code is orientation-independent, meaning there is no left/right or top/bottom. The other advantage to Aztec codes is that they do not require white space surrounding the code. This makes reading of the codes and placing them in applications or in print very efficient. When an Aztec code is read, it is read in layers from the inside out. Important or critical data can be stored near the center to reduce the loss of data and errors. Aztec codes also incorporate a much more sophisticated form of error correction making them an excellent choice for print materials. The codes are more resistant to errors experienced by wrinkled paper, or even stained paper.

FAQ From Announce Mobile's CEO Jeff Mould

Continuing on yesterday’s post regarding 2D codes, Hip2D, and our partnership with NeoMedia to utilize their qode® technology I would like to take the time to address some of the more common questions we receive regarding this technology. Below is a brief FAQ of some common questions. While I am not going to go in depth on any of them in particular, they should give you an idea and hopefully answer some questions you may have regarding the 2D barcode realm.

1. Is “qode” a standard for 2D barcodes?

No, qode is a technology for reading and responding to the 2D code. Currently the primary standard the qode®reader is able to read is the Aztec Code, however, more are coming. The Datamatrix and QR Codes are well on their way.

For a better definition of all the various standards I would suggest searching on Google or Wikipedia. Going in depth here would be a long and tedious post when the answers are out there already.

In summary though, the biggest difference between the various standards is the amount of data they can store and how that data is processed, i.e. is the information stored directly on the 2D barcode or does it redirect the application to a website via a central server.

2. Why has adoption of 2D codes been so slow and why is the market hesitant?

The biggest reason the market has been slow is that there are so many different standards. There are some companies that are developing their own 2D to work specifically with their application. The way the current market is structured is almost like if each appliance in your house had a different type of plug on it and the builder had to guess as to what is most common and put that type throughout your home, hoping that the majority of your appliances would work. The same holds true for 2D codes. Brands are still trying to sort out what is going to be the standard, or at minimum what is going to be the most widely accepted. They are quietly sitting back and letting the different companies battle it out.

The formation of MC2 (Mobile Codes Consortium) is a significant jump in the right direction of developing the standard in the market. In fact their primary goal at this time is to develop that standard.

3. Why does it take so long to get the applications capable of reading the codes to market?

Welcome to the world of mobile. Unlike applications designed for a PC, applications for phones have a typically longer development lifecycle. There are numerous hoops that must be jumped through for each carrier, each phone manufacturer, and sometimes even down to a specific model. Releasing one version of the software that runs on all phones is impossible. Each phone manufacturer has a different set of APIs and each application must be developed independently.

Additionally, there are several steps beyond that. Again, unlike Microsoft, application developers looking to deploy their mobile application on a large scale must go through various certifications at both the manufacturer and carrier level. These all take time and add to the development time.

Plain and simply, it is impossible to launch a large scale application, such as qode reader, by just throwing together some code and posting it on a website for download. Each application is throughly tested and certified to run on the device and thus development time is increased.

4. Are there currently any plans or are any carriers going to integrate the technology on their phones? What about manufacturers?

Right now I really can’t answer this question completely. One thing is for certain in the answer, it will be a whole lot easier to gain carrier and/or manufacturer acceptance with a standard in the market.

The other half of this question that needs to be understood is just because a manufacturer agrees to include the application in their device, does not necessarily mean that the carriers that utilize that particular make and model will allow their subscribers to use the application. Again, without going in depth here, the carriers will and do lock down various applications that come pre-installed on the phones.

The key is more getting both the carriers AND the manufacturers to accept the application and allow the subscriber to use it.

5. Is Announce Mobile providing development help or guidance on the development of the qode reader?

No, the development of qode reader and the technology behind it are strictly the responsibility of NeoMedia.

6. Does Announce Mobile plan to support the various standards once supported by the application?

Announce Mobile will support the standards that qode reader supports. We are a partner with NeoMedia and as a partner we will support their decisions and initiatives in regards to what their application is capable of doing.

7. Does Announce Mobile have plans to join MC2?

No not currently. Again we consider NeoMedia a strong partner and have the utmost faith in them to address our concerns and points to the MC2 community. However, we are not eliminating the possibility of joining at a later date and the entire MC2 initiative will continue to remain high on our radar.

8. When is the market for 2D barcodes going to explode in the US?

This is a tough question to answer. There are a lot of factors that go into answering this question, some of which I can and some of which I can’t discuss here. However, the once answer that it is certain, is the establishment of a standard for 2D barcodes throughout the market. Similar to how UPC symbols on just about every packaged good you purchase are standard, the market must establish a similar standard for the 2D code.

This is also a catch-22 question. 2D Barcodes are not going to be accepted by brands until a demand is there, however, a demand can not be generated unless the codes are there. So how do we generate this demand, encourage your friends, family, whoever, to download the qode reader today. The more consumers that have it on their phone the easier it is for companies like Announce Mobile and NeoMedia to sell the product.

Announce Mobile's CEO Discusses Hip2D

There has been a lot of attention given recently to the use of 2D codes in marketing. Solutions such as NeoMedia’s qode® technology have been a driving force behind this attention. Since this is such a large topic and there are many aspects to it, I am going to split the discussion across a series of posts (between e-mail and this blogging thing I will have carpel tunnel in a month otherwise).

Announce Mobile has selected qode as the backbone for our Hip2D solution. We have been getting a lot of questions surrounding what Hip2D is exactly and how we are using qode in it. Hip2D is essentially qode. The underlying difference is that we have added the design, implementation, hosting, and management of the complete WAP interface to it. So with Hip2D not only do you get qode and all that goes along with it, you also get the content to link the 2D code to.

Why is this important? Because without the content, the 2D code goes nowhere plain and simple. It is up to the business or organization purchasing the 2D code to develop and manage the content. Now don’t get me wrong and before everyone runs out and says Jeff from Announce Mobile is bad mouthing qode. I’m not, don’t worry! qode IS important because without it, the content is not as valuable. qode makes the content available and easy to use for the consumer. So they NEED each other. This content can consist of product information, a ringtone/music/wallpaper/game download, a hint or clue for a scavenger hunt, a price lookup, or a product information portal. The possibilities are nearly endless as to what you can provide to the consumer via qode.

So what is qode? Without delving into the entire technical jargon and long drawn out explanation, for now let’s leave it at qode is a mobile code-reading platform which can read and decipher UPCs and 2-dimensional barcodes. There are several different standards for these codes and together with a longer explanation we will discuss that in a future post. NeoMedia’s qode works by installing an application, called the qode®reader, onto a standard camera phone. The qode®reader software integrates into the camera and allows the consumer to take a picture of the 2D code. Combined with a back-end server, it then translates that code and redirects the consumer’s mobile browser to a specific piece of content. Like a UPC symbol on the back of a box of cereal translates into what brand, type, and price at the grocery store, the 2D code does essentially the same thing but on steroids. Instead of just providing a basic piece of information (i.e. name/brand/price), the code can provide a lot more and can be dynamic. The result provided by a qode can be based on location, phone make/model, user preference, time of day, time of year, the list goes on.

An example of use of qode is the corner video store. How many times have you gone to a movie store, looked at several movies, and wondered just what the movie was about? Would making a decision have been easier if you could have watched a trailer for the movie while you were in the store? Had the movie case had a 2D code on it, and assuming you had the qode®reader installed on your phone, you probably could have. Of course for this example to work at all, there are several other pieces that need to be provided, and that is where Announce Mobile and NeoMedia have teamed up to provide a complete solution called Hip2D.

Hip2D would have been the driving power behind that movie trailer you would have watched on your phone. Working directly with studios, or even the corner video store, a 2D code could have been printed on the DVD insert and mobally linked to a WAP portal that in turn would have streamed the video to your phone (assuming your phone could handle video).

So there you have it. That is Hip2D in a nutshell and that is why Hip2D is such an important product for Announce Mobile and NeoMedia. Due to the depth of this topic, the amount of discussion causes, and overall interest level, I am going to take each day this week to discuss a different aspect of the 2D code industry. Barcodes Can Talk With Your Cellphone

It sounds like something straight out of a futuristic film: House hunters, driving past a for-sale sign, stop and point their cellphone at the sign. With a click, their cellphone screen displays the asking price, the number of bedrooms and baths and lots of other details about the house. Media experts say that cellphones, the Swiss Army knives of technology, are quickly heading in this direction. New technology, already in use in parts of Asia but still in development in Europe and North America, allows the phones to connect everyday objects to the Internet.

In their new incarnation, cellphones become a sort of digital remote control, as one CBS executive put it. With a wave, the phone can read encoded information on everyday objects and translate that into videos, pictures or text files on its screen.

“The cellphone is the natural tool to combine the physical world with the digital world,” that executive, Cyriac Roeding, the head of mobile-phone applications for CBS, said the other day.

In Japan, McDonald’s customers can already point their cellphones at the wrapping on their hamburgers and get nutrition information on their screens. Users there can also point their phones at magazine ads to receive insurance quotes, and board airplanes using their phones rather than paper tickets. And film promoters can send their movie trailers from billboards.

Advertisers say they are interested in offering similar capabilities in the United States, but cellphones in the States do not come with the necessary software. For now, consumers have to download the technology themselves.

Still, big advertising and technology companies like Hewlett-Packard and Publicis Groupe, an advertising conglomerate, are pushing to popularize the technology here via the formation of the Mobile Codes Consortium.

Until now, in most parts of the world, Web surfing has been separate from everyday activities like riding the train, watching television and driving. But the new technology may erode that distinction.

“You’ve picked up this product, and you don’t want to go back to your PC,” said Tim Kindberg, a senior research at the Bristol, England, lab of Hewlett-Packard. “Or you’re outside this building, and you want more information. We call it the physical hyperlink.”

In much the same way that Web publishing took off because of the ability to link to other people’s sites, cellphone technologies linking everyday objects with the Web would reveal the digitally encoded attributes of tangible things on grocery shelves or newsstands.

“Everything in the physical world has information related to it somewhere electronically, including yourself and the desk you’re sitting in,” said Chas Fritz, chief executive of NeoMedia Technologies, a company developing these cellphone capacities.

The most promising way to link cellphones with physical objects is a new generation of bar codes: square-shaped mosaics of black and white boxes that can hold much more information than traditional bar codes. The cameras on cellphones scan the codes, and then the codes are translated into videos, music, or text on the phone screens.

Datamatrix barcodes are already appearing in the United States on some state drivers’ licenses and on some mailing labels, mostly for commercial use.

There are other technologies being developed for consumers to scan objects, including radio waves, computer chips, or satellite location systems, but the bar code technology is the most developed — and simple and cheap enough even for individuals to publish them on printed materials or on Web sites.

But Hewlett-Packard and the Publicis Groupe are meeting for the second time with cellphone carriers and handset manufacturers in May to advocate for the technology. Companies like Motorola and Microsoft have also been researching uses for the codes.

In Japan, the codes did not become mainstream until the largest cellphone companies started loading the code readers on all new phones a few years ago. Now, millions of people have the capability built into their phones, and businesses, in turn, are using them all over — on billboards, street signs, published materials and even food packaging.

In the late 1990s, several dozen start-up companies tried to create devices that would scan print content and ads and then reveal extra information to the reader. But consumers balked at using a special device only to interact with magazines and newspapers.

But now the time seems right for cellphones, ubiquitous and increasingly sold with cameras, to be pressed into service as the scanners.

“There are three things you tend to carry — your keys, your wallet and your phone,” said Rishad Tobaccowala, chief executive of Denuo, a unit of the Publicis Groupe that focuses on emerging and future technologies.“ I can see something in advertising in one place, scan it with my phone and recall it later when I am shopping. Or, imagine, I can buy it using my phone.”

About a third of the 84 million households with cellphones in the United States have phones that have cameras on them, according to Forrester Research, and that number is expected to grow as consumers replace their phones. But few people with those phones have downloaded the software to read the codes.

In Japan, some highway billboards have codes large enough for passing motorists to read them with their phones. Hospitals put them on prescriptions, allowing pharmacies to instantly scan the medical information rather than read it. Supermarkets stick them on meat and egg packaging to give expiration dates and even the names of the farmers who produced them.

One of the most popular uses in Japan has been paperless airline tickets. About 10 percent of the people who take domestic flights of All Nippon Airways now use the codes on their cellphones instead of printed tickets.

Yasuko Nishigai, 22, used her cellphone recently to buy a ticket from Tokyo to the Japanese tropical island of Okinawa. To board her flight, she waved the code on her cellphone screen over a scanner.

“I didn’t use a single piece of paper, just my phone,” she said.

The codes are “a natural extension of print,” said Nina Link, the president of the Magazine Publishers Association. “How many times have you engaged with a magazine and you’ve seen something and you’ve said, ‘Boy, I’d really like to remember to get that information.’ And you have to remember to write down the URL.”

The new technology would allow phones to read the codes from computer screens, too. Commuters rushing out the door could scan Web sites on their computer screens with their phones to take the content with them.

MySpace users could put a code on their personal pages, so that their friends can quickly transfer the profiles to their phones.

The technology would also allow advertisers to do something they could never effectively do before: monitor the impact of their ads in old media like magazines and billboards by measuring how often their codes are clicked.

In the Philippines, the Daily Philippines newspaper has run ads with the codes. In Britain, News Group Newspapers, the division of the News Corporation that includes newspapers like The Sun, is testing the codes along with some of its sports articles. Readers can scan the code in the newspaper and then see videos relating to the article. Similarly, Economie Matin, a magazine in France, is testing the codes.

In the United States last fall, the Canadian alternative rock band Barenaked Ladies placed the codes on concert posters. The publisher Prentice Hall is including the codes in a new marketing textbook for undergraduates so that they can get updates on case studies using the codes.

Executives at Verizon, AT&T and Sprint declined to say whether they were in discussions with the companies that make the code reading technology. Barcode companies said the carriers stood to benefit from the codes because they might encourage consumers to add Internet service plans to their accounts and spend more time on their phones.

The wireless companies have other options to help cellphones interact with the physical world. They could, for instance, adopt image recognition software, which would allow phones to recognize anything — a Coca-Cola can, for example — and deliver related information. Or, text messaging, currently the most common way that advertisers interact with consumers on their phones, has many advertiser applications.

Advertisers have also experimented with Bluetooth wireless devices and radio frequency identification to beam messages from billboards to consumers’ cellphones, but those technologies are more expensive than the codes.

Even if the wireless companies adopt the barcodes, they will have several formats to choose from. The most widely used ones have names like Semacode, QR Code and qode.

Getting consumers to use new technologies like these codes takes a lot of marketing by the carriers, said David Oberholzer, associate director of content programming at Verizon Wireless. He said Verizon is just starting to profit from the work it did to create interest in text messaging.

“The consumer needs a reason to do it,” said Jim Levinger, chief executive of Nextcode, a barcode company. “They don’t just wake up and say, hey let’s go scan some barcodes."
